HRL Research Labs

Creating Focused Research Around Questions That Matter

?

Connectivity needs depth

A research ecosystem needs connectivity, but connectivity alone is not enough.

Researchers also need intellectual depth.

They need communities where people working on similar questions can engage with one another over time, build knowledge, identify research gaps and develop a shared body of work.

This is the role of HRL Research Labs.

A Research Lab is not necessarily a physical space. It is a focused community built around a broad area of inquiry.

The Labs provide the thematic architecture of HRL.

They help answer an important question:

What are we trying to understand about society?

The seven Research Labs

Development, Infrastructure & Sustainability

Development is one of the most important questions facing contemporary society.

But development cannot be understood only through economic indicators.

It also involves infrastructure, communities, institutions, technology, environment, culture and quality of life.

The Development, Infrastructure & Sustainability Lab can examine how these dimensions interact.

Research may explore

UrbanizationRural developmentInfrastructureTechnologySustainable developmentEnvironmental challengesEconomic opportunitiesCommunity resilience

A road, water system, transport network or digital infrastructure is not merely a physical asset. It changes how people live, work and interact. Understanding those consequences requires social research.

Social Harmony

Social harmony is not simply the absence of conflict.

It involves relationships, trust, inclusion, belonging and the ability of different groups to live and work together.

The Social Harmony Lab can study:

Community relationshipsIntergenerational changeFamily structuresSocial mobilityCultural interactionInclusionSocial resilience

Its purpose is to understand what strengthens or weakens social cohesion.

Youth & Women

Young people and women are central to understanding social transformation.

The Youth & Women Lab can investigate:

AspirationsEducationEmploymentEntrepreneurshipMigrationDigital behaviorLeadershipParticipationChanging family and social relationships

Current research interests

GenZ news behaviorGenZ social issuesWomen's participation in politics

A primary-data pilot on women in politics has also been initiated with SP College, Pune. These examples illustrate how broad themes can become focused research programs.

National Security & Contemporary Challenges

National security is increasingly connected to social and technological change.

Research can therefore examine:

Information ecosystemsMisinformationStrategic communicationSocial resilienceEmerging technologiesDemographic changeCyber-social behaviorOther contemporary challenges

The Lab can bring together researchers from humanities, social sciences, technology and other disciplines.

Glorious India

A society cannot understand its present without engaging seriously with its past.

The Glorious India Lab can study:

HistoryIndian Knowledge SystemsLiteratureArtsArchitectureHeritageCultural traditionsOral historiesHistorical narratives

The objective is to create rigorous scholarship that documents, studies and interprets India's intellectual and cultural heritage.

Nationalism & Ideology

Ideas influence how people understand society, citizenship and nationhood.

The Nationalism & Ideology Lab can explore:

NationalismNation-buildingPolitical thoughtConstitutional valuesDemocratic idealsIdentityIdeological traditions

Research in this area benefits from historical depth, interdisciplinary scholarship and engagement with different perspectives.

Politics & Governance

Governance determines how institutions operate and how decisions are translated into public outcomes.

The Politics & Governance Lab can examine:

Public policyPublic administrationDecentralizationLocal governanceCivic participationInstitutional capacityTechnology and governancePolicy implementation

Research can go beyond reviewing policy documents to examine how policies are implemented in practice.

How Labs work

A Research Lab begins with questions.

It then:

  • Develops a research agenda
  • Identifies researchers
  • Creates projects
  • Conducts studies
  • Organizes seminars
  • Builds datasets
  • Publishes findings
  • Creates dialogue around its area

Labs can also become homes for Fellows and student researchers.

The long-term objective

Over time, a successful Lab should develop a recognizable body of knowledge.

That is the long-term objective: not simply to conduct individual studies, but to create sustained research communities around important questions facing society.
